When our students enter middle and high school, the saying goes that they stop learning to read and start reading to learn.  Then why is literacy still a struggle for so many of our students?  The reality is that elementary school isn’t designed to prepare students for Othello and Song of Solomon: so what do we do? Love and Literacy steps into the classrooms of extraordinary teachers who have guided students to the highest levels of literacy.  There is magic in their teaching, but that magic is replicable. It starts with a simple premise:  kids fall in love with texts when they understand them, and that understanding comes from the right knowledge and/or the right strategy at the right time. Love and Literacy dissects the moves of successful teachers and schools and leaves you with the tools to make these your own: Research-based best practices in facilitating discourse, building curriculum, guiding student comprehension and analysis, creating a class culture where literacy thrives, and more Video clips of middle and high school teachers implementing these practices An online, print-ready Reading and Writing Handbook that places every tool at your fingertips to implement effectively Discussion questions for your own professional learning or book study group Great reading is more than just liking books: it’s having the knowledge, skill, and desire to experience any text in all its fullness.  Love and Literacy guides you to create environments where students can build the will and wherewithal to truly fall in love with literacy.

Speaking as a former high school English teacher, I often struggled to find instructional advice pitched at the right level -- big-picture enough to be adaptable to my needs, detailed enough to give me specific actionable procedures. "Love and Literature" is pitched at exactly the right level. In clear, engaging, accessible language, Bambrick-Santoyo and Chiger provide a flexible, rigorous research-supported framework for literature instruction at the middle and high school levels. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 addresses curriculum development, part 2 deals with using written work in the classroom to assess and develop student literacy, part 3 describes how to build habits of productive academic discourse in the classroom, and part 4 suggests a variety of ways to create a culture of reading in your classroom and your school. While each of the parts is excellent, parts 2 and 3 are where the book really shines for me and should be required reading for English teachers (and other teachers too!). These areas are often neglected in both theory and practice, but to my mind, they are the core of a truly excellent classroom. When in-class writing is a valuable tool for both teachers and students to be able to express and see each other's understanding rather than just busywork, and when classroom discussion flows in a focused, student-centered way instead of just being another lecture to tune out, that's when real growth happens, and "Love and Literacy" explains both why and how to make that happen. The audience for this book is clearly English teachers, but there is a lot that English students, parents of middle and high schoolers, and administrators could get from it. If I were still teaching I would certainly use Part 1's explanation of what it means to "get" a work of literature as a handout for my students. For parents and administrators, "Love and Literacy" gives a great description of what effective English instruction looks like. Some other notes: the videos do a capable job of demonstrating the dynamics the book describes. They are also warts-and-all. These classes will be immediately recognizable as authentic even though the level of student discussion is very high.A useful section at the end of the "Love and Literature" directly addresses what to do if, as an English teacher, you do not have the support of your department or your school in seeking to implement the practices described in the book. While both the tone and content of the book are down-to-earth and pragmatic, there's something quietly revolutionary going on here. Great teachers have always taught English this way, but often it just seems like magic -- not just to observers, but to the teachers themselves. "Love and Literacy" explains how to make the magic work in a way that anybody can follow and anyone can implement. Here's hoping it gets a lot of readers.
